What Is 5-Axis CNC Machining
CNC is one of the widely adopted methods to remove the material from metal using high-speed cutting tools. The accuracy of CNC machines remains matchless, as it enables manufacturers to have what they exactly want. Typically, CNC machines can be segregated into three main types; horizontal milling machines, vertical milling machines, and lathes. All of these types use the combination of CAD and CAM to present the final part into its desired shape.
After knowing the basics of CNC, let’s talk about the 5-Axis CNC machine, which is equipped with more axes than a typical CNC or 3-axis CNC machine. In literal meaning, the 5-Axis CNC machine can move in 5 directions instead of moving in 3 directions. Of course, the rotation and movement of the cutting tool in 5 directions bring more efficiency to the machining process.
More commonly, the 5-Axis is obtained by adding rotation or tilt to the tool spindle or work-holding platform. It is necessary for the manufacturing of parts that offer complex movement. It is also convenient for operators to accomplish five faces in one operation. So, the improved efficiency and precision of the 5-Axis machines are adding value to their services.
For determining the paths of the tool, the CAD model is fed into the CAM software, which then creates codes that instruct the machine about the speed of the cutting tool and movement of the tool. So, the 5-Axis machine can operate in the 5-Axis, including X, Y, Z, A, and B coordinate system. The coordinate system in 5-Axis works in the following manners:

  • X-Axis operates left to right.
  • Y-Axis operates from front to back.
  • Z-Axis operates from top to bottom.
  • A-Axis Rotates around X-axis (tilts backward and forward)
  • B-Axis Rotates around Y-axis (tilts and spins from left to right)

5-Axis CNC Machining vs. 3+2-Axis CNC Machining

Many people tend to confuse these two techniques. 5-axis CNC machining, also known as continuous 5-axis machining, involves the continuous rotation of cutting tools along five axes. In contrast, 3+2-axis machining executes a 3-axis program. During this process, the cutting tool is locked at an angle. The two rotary axes determine this angle.
The main advantage of 5-axis over 3+2-axis CNC machining is speed. The latter involves constant stopping and starting of the machine between each tool orientation. However, the former completes the cutting in a single operation. Furthermore, 5-axis machining is more suitable for complex surfaces, while 3+2-axis CNC machining works mainly for plane processing.
Since 5-axis machines require lesser clamps and no special fixture, the machining cost is lower than with 3+2-axis counterparts. However, you should note that the programming involved with the 5-axis technology is much more complicated than the 3+2-axis machining.

FAQ

Q: How Can I get a quotation?
A: Please provide 2D(or 3D) files or samples. Draw format: IGS, STEP, STP, JPEG, PDF, DWG, DXF, CAD etc.

Q: What is your machining scope?
A: CNC or non CNC machining(include turning and milling), grinding, punching, laser printing(logo) /engraving, Wire EDM service.

Q: How quickly can you provide me a quotation?
A: Quotations are turned around usually in 24 hours (during business hours) depending on complexity.

Q: What's the timeframe to produce my parts?
A: Typically around 3-4 weeks lead time for production, but that may vary depending on our workloads and complexity of your product.

Q: How do you ship the finished goods?
A: For small samples we will air freight, but for production it will depend on your finished size and weight of your goods. For small goods we can air freight, for large we typically will send by sea or rail (depending on your location).
